So one of the cool things about getting up at 5:30am on a Saturday to drive to the Boro to volunteer at a 5K? Seeing a gorgeous sunset like this. Yes, I totally took this while sitting at a red light to turn onto the interstate. I have a tendency to keep my camera in my purse for such opportunities.
I had a great time volunteering. I was positioned at the finish line to clip timing chips off of people's shoes. At first, I was really excited because it meant watching everyone finish their race! Then, I realized it also means seeing everyone when they're tired, out of breath and possibly on the verge of throwing up. I became VERY aware of the latter possibility when they were hovering over me as I quickly clipped the chip.
I did see two people throw up before getting out of the finish line area. There were a bunch of high school cross country teams there to run, and it seems that a few of the young ones haven't quite figured out what's ok to eat before a race. I felt a little bad for them. Hopefully they'll learn.
I headed back home and crawled back into my bed as any sane person would do at 9am on a Saturday morning after getting up before sunrise for a volunteer opportunity. Once I was back up and dressed appropriately, I headed back to the Boro to go to a first birthday party for one of my best friend's son.
There was BBQ and present opening (one-year-olds rack up!) and chocolate cake... all the makings of a good birthday party. Once the family left, we hung out eating some pizza and watching some of the final Olympic events. I TOTALLY stayed up super late and watched the men's basketball final from 1:30 to about 2:30. Then I drove home and caught the end of it, not going to bed until close to 4am! I haven't stayed up that late in ages.
I became very aware of why I don't do that much anymore on Sunday. I suppose I could have slept in, but I got up around 10am to head to meet someone at Starbucks for some coffee and conversation.
I spent the rest of Sunday hanging out and catching the end of the Olympics. I have to admit that I'm kind of sad they are over.
It ended up being a really great weekend full of friends and fun. My weekends always seem to go by too quickly, but I'm really glad that they've been so fulfilling these past few summer months.
Hope everyone else had a good one!
