Race report: Titans 5K August 25, 2012

My friend Adam is a big Titans fan.  He's not much of a runner, so when he asked me if I wanted to run the Titans Back to Football 5K, I said sure.

Basically, all the cities with NFL teams were going to have a 5K to kick off the football season.  You were going to get a Nike tech tee and a ticket to a Titans game.  It was a bit pricier than most 5Ks at $60, but it seemed like you were getting a lot for your money.

So I was VERY annoyed when I got to packet pickup and the tech shirts were an offbrand and they were all men's sizes.  I held up the small, and I am pretty sure 3 of me could fit in it.  I found out the event was being run by Competitor Group (which if I had known this before, I never would have signed up.)  I spoke to a staff person and asked why they didn't order better sizes for women or women's fit, and she was like "well, it was a first year event so we didn't know."  Just want to point out that this may have been the first of THIS race, but I'm pretty sure this wasn't Competitor Group's first rodeo.

Nonetheless, we went and ran and had fun.  It's always neat to finish on the Titans field and see yourself up on the JumboTron.  (Granted, there is also a $50 half marathon in town each year where you can do the same, but I digress.)

All in all, we had a fun time and also ran into a few friends.  And you better believe I drank my free beer even though it was 8:30 in the morning.  I won't be running this race again as it was definitely way too expensive and clear that they wanted to make money more than they wanted to provide a quality experience and shirts to their runners.  The company that I had for the race was what made it fun.

I'm also not a big fan of those big companies organizing races. It always feels like a rip off. I ran once a Rock n Roll event and was not impressed. Unfortunately it seems they buy local races and rename them.
