Race Report: Tap N Run 4K August 11, 2012

Back in August, a few friends and I decided we'd run in the first ever Tap N Run 4K here in Nashville.  The idea just sounded too fun to pass up: run in costume, only run 4K, and drink beer at the start, 4 chug stations and at the finish.

We got together a few weeks before and decided we wanted to run as beer pong... so then we spent a fair bit of time making costumes.

The end result was pretty awesome.

We had a terrific time together, and our costumes were a big hit.  I felt famous!  As we walked downtown to the race, people on the street were stopping to stare and take pictures.  When we got to the race, everyone else running loved our costumes and kept coming up to take pictures with us.  Super fun.

As for the race?  Well... they could use some help in organizing it.  We started well over 30 minutes late, which was VERY annoying.  All of the beer stations were clogged and we'd stand and wait a good 5 minutes each time to get our beer.  And at the finish?  They dragged out the awards for costumes... like, spent 30 minutes on the best "short sorts" and then another 30 minutes on the best mustache.  We finally gave up on trying to be in the best costume contest because it was taking so long.  We were hungry and ready to go eslewhere to eat and drink.

Will I do it again?  No.  But it was definitely a blast to do it once, even though the race was poorly executed.  It was just great to do something like this with fun friends and enjoy getting out in costumes and such.

Wilson County Fair

So the Tennessee State Fair pretty much sucks.  I've only been once, and it was the same summer I had also been to the Texas State Fair.  I was really unimpressed.

Over the past few years, there's been more and more talk about how awesome the Wilson County Fair is around here.  I never really went to fairs or carnivals growing up, and I was itching to check it out.

On a Friday night, my family met up with some close friends and their kiddos for a fun night at the fair.  We ate all sorts of yummy food (pizza on a stick! lemonade! fried cookie dough! blackberry cobbler!).  We rode all sorts of rides (that my parents used to tell me weren't safe to ride.  I suppose we've all gotten over those fears as we've gotten older.)  We walked around and watched people and saw animals and got nipped at by a camel.

And it was a blast watching the kids play and enjoy the rides.  I may not be ready for my own children, but it can definitely be fun hanging out with my friends who have kids and playing with them!

If you live around here and ever have a chance to go to the Wilson Co. Fair, do it!

EPIC Weekend

I had a pretty epic weekend.

There was a birthday dinner Friday night where my friend and I enjoyed two bottles of wine. To be fair, dinner consisted of 4 appetizers, 2 salads, 2 pastas, 3 entrees and a vegetable, and 2 desserts.  It took like 4 hours.  And there was dancing.

But I still slept til noon on Saturday.

A friend and I had breakfast at Waffle House.  And when I say breakfast, I mean 1pm.

I actually eat at Waffle House quite often all things considered.  It's usually pretty uneventful, but this visit was epic.  We didn't talk to each other the entire time we were in there.  It's hard to explain, but there was a moment when I told him I felt like I was sitting in the middle of a reality tv show.

There was the table behind us that kept adding a new person every 5 minutes and needed something new from the waitress every time she came back.

There were 4 cooks and 6 servers, and they all kept snapping and yelling at each other.

Our waitress answered her cell phone.

The servers asked one guy when he came in why he didn't bring them Krisy Kreme donuts. (I assume he is a regular and he has done this before.)

There was a guy talking on the phone to someone and kept telling this person, "well, I love you like a brother man, and I just wanted to hear your voice" and told him a story about visiting his mom in a hospital.

And we saw a lot of food get thrown away because orders were cooked wrong.

It was nuts.

I got to meet up with Steph and her hubby for a bit since they were in town for a wedding.

I went to a birthday cookout and realized we must be getting old because it was mostly married couples... and there were kids running around.

Sunday I was able to have brunch with Steph and her husband before heading with a friend to the Titans vs. Lions game.  It was the wildest game I have ever seen.  Crazy surprise plays.  A 105 yard touchdown.  A guy jumping over another guy's head to catch a ball that should have been impossible to catch.  Then we were winning 41-27 with less than 2 minutes to go when the Lions scored twice and tied it up.  We finally won in overtime.  And I determined that I know enough about football that I could probably get a job as a replacement ref.

By the time we got home Sunday night, I was all too happy to take a shower, get some Chipotle and watch a movie on the couch.

Seriously... sometimes my life is so much fun I can hardly believe it.  There are so many amazing people around me that I get to spend my time with.  I have moments where my life still isn't exactly where I want it to be, but I'm glad that I am able to remember to enjoy where I'm at as I'm on my way to wherever I'm going.

Since I Last Posted...

I ran a 5K that I need to write a race report about... I warn you now, it'll be more of a rant than a report. (Oh, and there's another race from earlier in August I still haven't reported on.)

I went to the Wilson County Fair.

I've been running the trails.

I saw Anjelah Johnson live at MTSU for free.

I went to George, Washington to see Dave Matthews Band perform at The Gorge Amphitheater three nights in a row and then spent some time in Seattle.

I finished planning and executed the Boot Run 5K.

Then I got sick.

I have been working from my couch today surrounded by tissues and drinking OJ like a boss.

Basically, I've been living live instead of writing about it, and now all that living has made my body revolt.

Oh, and I'm going to Gatlinburg this weekend to do some hiking.

I have lots of amazing pictures and stories to share.  Be back soon.
