Random Summer 2016 Fun

Connor gets to come home quite a bit in the summers, and we made sure to find plenty of fun to get into last summer after our vacation to Tybee Island.

We spent a LOT of time at our neighborhood pool.

We celebrated the 4th of July with some fireworks and a family pool day/cookout.

My sister took this fun photo at the family pool day.

We visited my Grandma when she was in a rehab place. It's a little bittersweet looking back on this photo now, knowing this was in July and she passed away in December. She really loved Connor, and I'm so glad they got to know each other.

Connor and I visited Daddy at work one day so that he could check out his office, and we went out to lunch nearby!

We also celebrated two years in our home!

I love looking back on our summer. Even though grad school kept us from having as much time as we normally like to enjoy in the summer, we still managed to squeeze in a lot of fun!

Recent Good Times

Last week, we were able to have a little fun as a family and as a couple!

Adam and I found a site online to get frames for our graduate diplomas, and they arrived early in the week. We really didn't want to spend the money that many stores would have charged for framing and matting, but the price was right with this site we found. We were really impressed with the quality when they arrived, and we were excited to get those pieces of paper in there and hung in our office at home.

We were also very excited to take Connor to see Beauty and the Beast at the movies on Tuesday. We all LOVED it. I had no idea Emma Watson could sing!

On Wednesday, Adam and I totally had cheese and crackers for dinner. It's random things like this that keep things interesting. Who needs to cook a big dinner every night?!

On Thursday, Adam surprised me with a special date night. It was our last night just the two of us before Connor came home for spring break, and as soon as his break ends I'm going to be working around the clock to finish plans for our biggest fundraiser of the year. We first had dinner at Butchertown Hall, and then we went to TPAC to see The Bodyguard. It was a super fun evening!

I probably won't have anything new to report until later in April once my event is over, but I'll try to get some more 2016 recap posts up here and there. I'm so glad we had some time to have a little fun this last week before I hit my crazy busy season!

2016 Summer Vacation to Tybee Island - Part 2

On Sunday, we woke up to another sunny, though windy, day. It was also Father's Day, so Connor and I had a few cards and a gift for Adam.

Daddy loved his new UT jersey with Peyton Manning's number!

We enjoyed a lot of the day out on the beach, but we took a small break to walk around some other little shops we hadn't checked out the day before.

We cleaned up after a full day of beach fun, and we drove into Savannah again for the evening. Since it was Father's Day, Adam got to pick our dinner spot and decided on Paula Deen's restaurant - The Lady and Sons. It was so good!!

As we finished eating, our waiter noticed we hadn't finished our cocktails yet and asked if we wanted him to pour them into a to go cup. Say what?! Apparently, you can walk around with drinks in Savannah. Who knew?

We walked around for a while and explored the area. Savannah is really charming, and Adam and I would love to go back sometime and spend a little time there either just us or maybe with friends.

After it got dark, we made our way back to the island and stopped again for ice cream/shaved ice before bed.

On Monday, we were able to spend the morning on the beach again before checking out of the hotel.

On our way out of town, we also drove over to see the lighthouse. It was neat!

Since we were still working our way through school, we didn't have time for a longer vacation. Nonetheless, this long weekend trip was the perfect getaway for some family fun this summer!

2016 Summer Vacation to Tybee Island - Part 1

Adam and I love being able to take Connor on trips whenever we can, and we decided to do a little summer vacation at the beach in 2016.

We had originally planned to go back to Pensacola, FL like we did in 2015, but as we got closer to the dates we booked the weather forecast was looking bad. So we cancelled that and changed our plans to go to Tybee Island, GA. In the end, it was actually less expensive and it was somewhere that none of us had been before!

We left Friday afternoon and made the drive, getting into town in time to check in and go to bed.

Little dude slept hard, but it didn't take us long to wake him Saturday morning so we could head to the beach!

We spent all morning playing in the sand and the waves. We were thankful we found a hotel right on the beach so we could easily walk in and out as needed.

Connor loves playing in the sand!

Even though it didn't rain while we were there, the weather was unfortunately still not ideal. We had a ton of wind, so that made the water so rough that they eventually put up double red flags and told everyone to stay out. Not ones to be deterred from having fun, we decided it was a good time for lunch and to explore the island.

We had some yummy lunch at a little place right across the street from our hotel.

We also found a fun ice cream and shaved ice spot for a treat.

I snapped this fun photo of my boys as we walked around exploring the area.

We also drove around a bit and stopped in a few of the beachy shops to poke around a bit. We made our way back out to the beach for a bit that afternoon, but we still weren't able to get in the water. After a bit, we cleaned up for the evening and drove into Savannah. We found a delicious pizza place, and then walked around a bit before heading back to our hotel.

It was a really fun first day of our trip!

Kicking Off 2016 Summer

Adam started last summer with two small weekend trips. We always love getting away, even if just for a night or two. We have a ton of fun going on road trips, even when they're random like one of these.

First, we went down to Atlanta in late May to see Dave Matthews Band (you're not the least bit surprised, are you?)

Since we had spent a weekend there for the show last year and done a couple of activities, we decided to just go for one night and the show this time around.

However, we did have to go to Shake Shack once we got into town Saturday! We love this place we discovered in NYC, and the location in Atlanta is the closest one to us so we don't miss an opportunity to go anytime we're in town or driving through town. Delicious!

After dinner, we made our way over to the concert. As always, it did not disappoint and we had a great time enjoying our favorite band.

Sunday morning we slept in a bit before having lunch and heading back home.

A few weeks later, we went to Tunica. This was so super random for us. In April, we had a package from one of the casinos there in the silent auction. No one was bidding on it, so we had lowered the starting bid at one point in the evening. Adam decided to bid on it, and he won, haha! One of the things I love about our marriage is that we have so much fun together, and we can make almost anything into a good time.

We hit the road on a Friday after work, and we stopped in Memphis to have dinner. Before long, we crossed into Mississippi (our first time in the state) and found our hotel in Tunica.

We knew before we went that we probably wouldn't enjoy the casino all that much. For starters, we weren't planning to gamble much. More than that, we hate cigarette smoke... and these places are full of it. Nonetheless, we knew it'd be neat to see the different little casinos.

It was clear as we drove in that Tunica's hay day has ended - a lot of the casinos/hotels are closed. My grandparents always loved gambling, so I would hear stories of them going there a lot before their health declined. It was kind of neat seeing what they were talking about.

It was fairly late in the evening when we arrived, so we spent a few minutes playing some penny slot machines and having a drink before going to our room to watch tv.

On Saturday, we slept in. As in, we woke up at almost noon and were shocked. It had been a pretty tiring spring with my big event at work (I had worked a 90 hour week for the first time in my life leading up to it), and we both were in the thick of some of our final (and hardest) classes of grad school. It was worth the very small price we paid for the hotel package at the auction to get this kind of good sleep. We had seriously been out cold all night!

We did a little research and found that there is virtually nothing to do in the area. We had gotten excited when we found something about a riverboat tour and decided we would go do it - but it had closed quite some time ago.

So instead, we went to Waffle House and enjoyed a delicious breakfast and then went over to where the riverboat used to be and took in the views of the Might Mississippi.

We then drove to another town about 30-40 minutes away and went to see a movie. HA. Even though we weren't doing a ton that we couldn't do at home, it was still really fun to just be away from our normal world and spend time relaxing together.

We got back to the hotel in time to use our vouchers for the buffet dinner. We tried a lot of food, and none of it was all that great. Nonetheless, it was included so we filled our bellies and then hit the penny slot machines again to round out our evening.

We got up the next morning and made our way back home. All in all, it was a fun, random little weekend away, but I can't say we'll ever see any need to go back to Tunica.

Memphis Fun

Adam had to go on a business trip over a weekend last year, so I decided that Connor and I needed to get into some fun while he was gone. This led to us spending a weekend with my parents in Memphis.

We drove over early Saturday morning and checked into our hotel. Connor loved spending the afternoon in the hotel pool!

That evening. we went to dinner and then saw The Jungle Book at the movies before crashing for the night.

The next morning, we were off to the Memphis Zoo. None of us had ever been, and we really enjoyed spending all day there as we checked out all the animals!

We had a ton of fun! We made our way back home after our day at the zoo, and I loved having this time with Connor and my parents!

Wedding Fun!

Adam and I spent a recent Saturday night at the wedding of one of my good friends. It is always so fun to see your girlfriends that you used to commiserate with about being single find her person and get married!

It was fun for us to have a reason to get all dressed up.

The wedding was at a beautiful church in Nashville, and it was a really sweet ceremony.

Then we made our way over to a nearby music school for the reception. We enjoyed some appetizers as we caught up with friends in the lobby for a bit.

Adam also had some fun with the decor.

We were let into the main room and got a table with some of our other friends and enjoyed a great evening. Dinner was delicious, the toasts were great, and the first dances were so sweet.  Then, we all joined in the dancing! Adam also had some more fun with the decor.

I love these friends so much. Many of my memories of my single days are with these people. We're all older now, and some of us are married. We all have more serious jobs now, and one of us doesn't even live here any more. Even though life looks a little different now and we're not altogether as often, these are still some very special friends. I'm glad we can always pick up where we left off.

And I'm so happy for Christina!

More Springtime Adventures 2016

As spring came to an end last year, we were still having some fun!

On Mother's Day, Adam and I went to church and then joined my family for lunch so that we could see my mom. We don't get to have Connor that weekend, but Adam gave me a very sweet card that Connor picked out for me. I also got some flowers! Being a stepmom is tough, and it made me feel so good to have my boys thank me for being a great mom. It was great to get to see my mom, too!

Not long after Mother's Day, I got to chaperone Connor's spring field trip. We had so much fun! First, we got to go on a boat ride. Connor's been on a boat with us a few times, but it was still fun to see how much he enjoys it!

Then, the kids got to zipline. Connor was a little nervous, but we talked about how much fun he would have and he climbed right on up. He loved it!

His last activity was archery. This was a bit tougher for him, but he still had fun giving it a try!
